Asking for permission for the song

To be sure we are not breaching any copyrights, we have contacted the band on Facebook to ask for permission to use their song. Below is a screenshot of the message we sent to the band's Facebook page.

We received a reply the next day allowing us to use the song 'Enough' for our music video. The band were very friendly and supportive, they did have a concern for the song's use in our coursework but we explained it is only for school use.

The pop genre

                                          The pop genre

Originally an abbreviation for popular music, pop is now a genre of its own. Derived from rock and roll, pop music really became its own genre in the 1950s, although it often mixes with other genres and can be very diverse. Pop songs are rarely long songs, and usually follow the structure of verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus.

Pop is associated more with the younger generation of under 30, both for audience and music artists, although it is not exclusively for one age bracket. The charts are mostly dominated by pop music, and can often be heard on radio stations such as capital and kiss. Also award ceremonies such as the teen choice awards, kids’ choice awards and BBC radio one teen awards often have a line up of pop artists performing due to the younger audience. For this reason pop music doesn’t usually include swear words or inappropriate language whereas rap music contains a lot because it has a different market.
Pop artists often have large fan bases and the very successful pop artists have their fans named a fandom e.g. one direction fans are directioners and Justin Bieber fans are beliebers. This is an example of how some people take the view that pop music is commercialised and all about getting fans and making money.

Most pop songs are around two and a half to three and a half minutes in length, and often are arranged around a catchy hook. A common format for a pop song is a verse followed by the chorus then another verse, another chorus and a bridge ending again with the chorus. Pop songs can be very repetitive and are therefore not always considered to be ‘proper songs’, some critics claim the pop genre is too manufactured and not expressive enough.

Lyric Analysis of Enough

I’ve highlighted the word “you” because it indicates, to the audience, that this song is being sung to a specific person who is anonymous to them. This “you” is a mystery to anyone listening to the song and so it creates intrigue. The reason this works so well and gauges the audience’s attention is because humans are naturally full of curiosity and like to become involved in situations. The fact that this song is being sung to someone specific also means that the person singing the lyrics has been affected in some way by them. We are hearing the story from the artist’s point of view and because the lyrics are emotional we feel as though we are being confined in. Yes we are only hearing one side of the story and are only revealed half of the emotion but we still feel sympathy and are therefore drawn in to the song.

Next I have highlighted the word “enough”. This word appears initially in the third line of the first stanza. The reason this is significant is because the title of the song is “enough” which means the audience will have picked up on it straight away. The title of a song is usually ambiguous before the whole song has been listened to because there isn’t any meaning behind the words and so the lyrics of the song give the name some context, it’s where the audience can put the jigsaw pieces together and see the bigger picture.

The word “but” has been signified because of audience expectation. Connecting words such as, but, however, although and yet are words that can cause suspense, this is because of their potential. When someone hears the word like “but” they will hang on every word that follows; it could be something fantastic or, more often than not, bad. It shows that people again can really connect with this song as it interests them.

The question marks are incredibly important to mention. Throughout the whole song the majority of the content is questions and this means reactions are evoked. By the artist asking this anonymous person questions the audience turn the circumstance around to see it from their point of view, as though the artist is asking them directly instead. This aspect of the song is very clever because it draws out empathy from the audience, they cannot help but feel for both “characters” in the story and really engage with what is being said from that point on. It also makes them reflect on their own lives and relate the question to them which plays an important part as by associating the lyrics to different people’s lives will mean that those people are more likely to remember this song and re-watch the video, therefore it will have repeat-ability.

The reason I have highlighted the word “so” is because it actually affected me. For some reason this word really struck me as odd. I realise that the whole song is a one sided hypothetical conversation but I feel like the word “so” is too colloquial and casual for the amount of emotion that is being portrayed with the rest of the lyrics. It is also the fact that “so” can be used in conversation in order to change topic or move on. I think that this word perhaps foreshadows what is to come of this story, a break up will occur and the “characters” in the story will move on with their lives. If the audience also feel this then I think they will not like this word either. As I mentioned earlier, humans are full of curiosity, yet we are also full of hope and I feel there is always that little part of us that will hold on, especially to the ending of this song. The words “needed” and “anymore” also do not help with the feeling of wanting there to be a happy ending because they are in the past tense which indicated that what the audience fear has already happened.

Repetition has been used for the lyrics “maybe I wasn’t what you were after at all” and this is a very powerful aspect which brings the song alive.   I find the repetition emphasises the point, heightens the drama, and ties all the elements together. A famous and brilliant use of repetition is found in a speech Winston Churchill delivered in 1940, when Nazi Germany was threatening to conquer England: “We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence …we shall defend our island…. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields …we shall fight in the hills …We shall never surrender.” Churchill's repeated use of the phrase “we shall fight” gave both rhythm and power to his words. Repeated words can set up a rhythm that adds to the language's musical quality, focuses the message, and supports the melody and I think this is exactly what was achieved with this song.

Research on band

  • Dinner and Suit are an American rock band based in Tennessee and was formed in 2008.
  • The band was formed when cousins Jonathan Capeci and Joey Beretta began writing music together.
  • Along with recruiting their long time friend Anthony Genca to play bass, the cousins built a band playing with various drummers in their first year.
  • They have played alongside other bands such as Imagine Dragons and Lawson.
  • The band's name is a tribute to Joey and Jonathan's great-grandmother. As Jonathan tells it:
“Joey and I are cousins and our great-grandmother was a seamstress who made and repaired clothes during the early part of the 20th century. When the factory that employed her would discard suits, she would take them home and spend her free time mending them. It was the Great Depression and times were tough for everyone. Wanting to make a difference in her own way, she made it a common practice to invite people who were down on their luck over to the house, cook for them and just spend time with them. When they left, she would give them one of the suits she was finished working on. Our family would tell us that they left her home with ‘dinner and a suit’ – and hence the name.”

Digipak analysis - Songs About Jane by Maroon 5 (2002)

Album cover analysis of Songs about Jane by Maroon 5 (2002)

The Initial Brainstorm of Ideas after the Conversation

After the Facebook conversation we all came together with a few of our own individual ideas on spider diagrams and combined them. Here are the brainstorms:

Initial Music Video Conversation

We created a Facebook group so that we could communicate with each other outside of the classroom. It came in very useful because it meant we were able to make decisions on which song to create a music video for and to also combine our initial ideas about it. The chat is very casual as it is on social media but I think this enhances the creative process we went through. Having ideas and brainstorming and negotiating with a team Is something that does need organisation but ultimately is can be a very messy and long ordeal. This is evidence of the team interacting with each other.
Joe Power http://m.soundcloud.com/jose-azul Link to their page, they like the top two songs most and if you dont like either i know some other singers who would be up for it

Ok so all agreed then? Dinner and a suit - Enough
Joe Sheehan i haven’t heard it but sure aha
Lydia Duncan Have a quick listen to it... hopefully you like it
Guys I’ve had a great idea as well...
you know how we have to have evidence for how we decided the song and our plans for it?
Joe Sheehan I’m confused what’s the song called?
Lydia Duncan well we should just screen grab this fb convo and put it onto the blog as "initial deciding conversation" or something
the song is called enough and it is by dinner and a suit
but yeah lets use this conversation as evidence for teamwork and the decision process
Joe Sheehan alright i will have a look now and yeh that seems like a good idea
Lydia Duncan alrighty... let us know what you think… ill copy and paste this conversation into word and save it just in case
Maya Tyrrell Good thinking Lydsy
